North Dakota is most often associated with its vast prairies and agricultural heritage. But more recently, we have emerged as a critical player in the global energy market. Our abundant natural resources and innovative spirit have positioned us as a leader in energy production and a significant contributor to international energy trade.
Now that Governor Burgum has been tapped by Donald Trump to head the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) come 2025, our success will be on display like never before. What does this success look like to the rest of the world?
The Bakken Boom
The rise of North Dakota in the energy sector can largely be credited to the Williston Basin, home of the famous Bakken Formation. This extensive tight oil reserve has catapulted the state into the spotlight, making it the second to third-largest oil producer in the United States, trailing only Texas and New Mexico.1 The marrying of two old technologies of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling has unlocked vast reserves of oil and natural gas, enabling North Dakota to export these resources worldwide.
ND’s crude oil is exported to international markets such as Asia, Europe and the America’s, providing energy security to countries seeking reliable and affordable supplies. This has not only elevated North Dakota’s importance in the global market but has also contributed to the diversification of U.S. energy exports.
Renewable Energy Leadership
While oil and gas dominate headlines, we have quietly become a leader in renewable energy. Our state’s geography offers ideal conditions for wind energy, with wind farms dotting the landscape and contributing significantly to electricity production. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration2, North Dakota generates more than 30% of its electricity from wind power, with a growing portion exported to other states and regions.
Investments in biofuels and solar energy further underscore our state’s commitment to an all-of-the-above energy strategy, ensuring our relevance in a world increasingly focused on sustainability.
Infrastructure and Innovation
Key to North Dakota’s energy market success is its investment in infrastructure and innovation. Pipelines, rail systems, and export terminals ensure that energy products reach global markets efficiently and safely.
Moreover, North Dakota is at the forefront of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, a game-changer for reducing emissions associated with fossil fuel production. Projects like the Red Trail Energy CCS initiative demonstrate our ability to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.3
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite our successes, North Dakota faces challenges in maintaining our global energy leadership. Geopolitical tensions, fluctuating oil prices, and the global push toward decarbonization pose risks. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation. By further diversifying our energy portfolio and investing in technologies that reduce emissions, North Dakota can cement its position as a sustainable energy powerhouse.
North Dakota’s role in the global energy market is a testament to our resourcefulness and adaptability. From powering homes and industries worldwide with our oil and gas exports to leading the charge in renewable energy and emissions reduction, our state continues to punch above its weight on the global stage.
As the world navigates an evolving energy landscape, ND’s contributions will remain essential, driving economic growth at home and ensuring energy security abroad. The future of global energy is being shaped, in part, on the prairies of our beautiful state.
